These freshwater fishing guides would not exist without these talented fishermen.

Roy Leyva

Roy Leyva is one of Massachusetts' top ranked trout anglers and winner of the 2004 Massachusetts Angler of the Year Award. In 1999 and 2001 he also received the gold pin and plaque for catching the largest brown trout of the year. His background originates from a long line of Cuban fishermen, and his dad taught him how to fish at a very young age. Born and raised in Boston, most of his fishing was for warm water and saltwater species.

By the age of 16 he had already won numerous tackle shop derbys for both fresh and saltwater, and had started to tie flies. This led him into the world of trout fishing, which was unfortunate since there were not a lot of opportunities to catch these fine fish in and around the city. The fact that these fish were so much more vibrant in color and harder to catch increased his interest in the species and by the age of 20 he was tying flies for local bait shops and making a name for himself among the local trout community. Since then he has weighed in more than 80 trout and salmon that have qualified for a bronze pin in the MassWildlife sports fishing award program. In early 2004 he caught a Japanese Koi at Jamaica Pond in Boston that was accepted by The Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame. He is currently a fishing instructor for inner city kids for a non-profit organization called The Fishing Academy, www.thefishingacademy.org, and also runs his own website, www.offthehookfishing.com. He is two fish species away from having honors of the master angler award, something that no one has yet to accomplish. "I hope you enjoy my article on catching trout and salmon and find it useful. And remember, please take the time to take a kid fishing, it does make a difference."

Jim Lambert

Jim Lambert has over 40-years of ice fishing experience and is one of the state's most accomplished anglers. He is the holder of the state and world record tiger muskie, weighing in at 27-pounds, that was caught on a tip-up while ice fishing on Pontoosuk Lake in 2000. Jim also caught the largest northern pike in the state in 2003. He is the recipient of six freshwater fishing awards in Massachusetts, and In Fisherman magazine gave him the distinction of "Master Angler." Jim has had articles published in several magazines including MassWildlife, On The Water, In Fisherman and Esox Angler. He is also in the process of writing an article on aquatic chemical weed control and its effects on fish populations. He is a teacher and an accomplished chef, and is the author of the recipes found in this guide.

Jim's love for fishing extends to education, where he is an active participant in the state's Angler Education Program by giving seminars to both youth and adult groups. Jim wants to remind everyone, "Kids who fish are much less likely to get in trouble. So please take a kid fishing. You'll both have fun."

Roger Pyzocha

Roger Pyzocha was born the fourth son in a family of five boys. His love of fishing started at a very early age, when at the age of three he stole his brother's fishing pole and went to the pond in the woods behind the family house. A lifelong resident of Ludlow, MA he does fish taxidermy and is an ambassador for Pure Fishing. His fishing accomplishments are too numerous to list, with over 300 Massachusetts State fishing awards, including 3 state records and the world record carp, at 44lbs. 2oz.

In 2002 he was awarded the first Massachusetts Angler of the Year Award. His fishing prowess has been featured in all the local and regional newspapers, national and regional publications such as Sports Afield, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, In Fisherman, Mepps, Woods & Waters USA, and others. Roger has been awarded many trophies and appreciation awards for his dedication to the sport of fishing and his fishing seminars. His most outstanding accomplishment came in 1994 when he was inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. With less than 300 anglers worldwide in the hall of fame it is the most prestigious award a fisherman can receive. You can contact him via e-mail at: Fishinghalloffamer@yahoo.com.

Jamie Worth

Jamie Worth has been fishing the Massachusetts area since he was four years old when he caught his first limit of bass. His father, Hugh, began the first bass fishing club in New England, teaching Jamie at an early age how to hunt down big bass. He began tournament fishing as a teenager in a local club that he and his father started from their home in Chelmsford, Mass. Today the Chelmsford Bass Tacklers fishing club is still going strong and Jamie serves as its current president. He has been on the Massachusetts Bass Federation State Team 5 out of the last 6 years. He was also the club's team captain the last two years on Lake Winnipesaukee and Lake Champlain. In 2002, on Lake Champlain, Jamie became the Massachusetts State Champion with a winning weight of 33.04lbs. In 2002 he also won the Mass Bass team event on Lake Winnipesaukee along with 7 tournaments that year.

In 2003, Jamie again qualified for a State Team on Lake Winnipesaukee and won the NEBA team open that year. 2004 was another award-winning year as he qualified for a fifth state team participation and placed second in the state championships. He also won the Green Mountain Team open on Lake Champlain and became the Regional Champion for Massachusetts qualifying for the 2005 B.A.S.S. Nationals, which will be televised on ESPN. During the Regional tournament Jamie helped Massachusetts to a second place finish overall among 14 other states. Jamie has over 40 career victories and has some great sponsors including Unleaded Fishing Products (www.unleadedtackle.com), Poor Boyz Scents (www.poorboyzinc.com), and Nissitissit Sales and Service/Extreme Bass trolling motor repair and sales.

Barry Gold is the Founder and Owner of Outdoor Recreation of Hopkinton (ORH), a recreational boating services company operating at Hopkinton State Park's Hopkinton Reservoir and for guided tours at Lake Whitehall. He started ORH in 2002 after a 22 year career in the database marketing industry. The park's boathouse building, "spoke to him for years," as it sat vacant and idle for over a decade. Bringing it to life with business during the warm weather months has been very gratifying. His goals for the business are to provide a local resource with diverse boating equipment and talented and friendly staff that can ensure each client's experience will exceed their expectations. ORH offers boat rental, sales, birthday parties, catering, clinics, outings, and team building programs. Since 2002 over 25,000 people have visited the boat house for kayaking, canoeing, sailing and many adventure based outings. Each year ORH sponsors fund raising events for various charities and this year groups will include the Jimmy Fund, Sudbury Valley Trustees, AMC, and the Mass Breast Cancer Coalition. In 2005, ORH will be running the Universal Access program in concert with the state's Department of Conservation and Recreation, enabling disabled people to enjoy the many benefits of boating. Barry is an ACA flat water certified kayak instructor and leads many of the youth and adult programs throughout the season, is a devoted four season mountain biker, and the proud husband of Gabrielle for 20 years and the father of two teenage daughters, Chelsea and Sasha. He can be reached via email at info@OutRecHop.com.
